I liked the Fehr signing when it happened but he definitely hasn't produced like I thought he would here.

@Guile, if you're still around,

I've spent 20 minutes googling around and I watched the TSN - Play to Lose documentary and there was zero doubt that they were taking Lemieux, there is no mention of them ever considering Kirk Muller over Lemieux. What documentaries or articles did you ever see that in?

Problem is donkeys don't show their face when they're wrong. They just hide until they have a chance to be morons again.

Mario Lemieux was as consensus a #1 pick as there's ever been in the NHL, even more than Crosby and Lindros were. He was the most highly touted prospect since Gretzky. They were taking him all the way.

With how Rutherford has been rebuilding this team since the MJ firing Fehr is most definitely the odd duck. Ever one else except maybe Horny and Dad (who both provide in other ways) are fleet of foot and can push play.

Why would a guy that averaged 4+ points per game in his draft year be a consensus pick though?

I understand that lol but Guile (over in the Blackhawks board) was saying that they were up in the air, and they were contemplating taking the other guy instead. Said it was all over documentaries and poop, but I've been looking for a while now and can't find poop about it. Dunno where he heard that.

The best argument that can be made is that they almost didn't lose enough. It came down to the last day of the season to see who could lose better, Pittsburgh or NJ. NJ won the game, Pittsburgh got Mario.

But there was no contest as to who would go #1 overall. In fact, in 1981, Montreal traded to get Hartford's first rounder for 1984 in hopes that Hartford would be last. They traded in anticipation of 3 years. That's pretty damn clear how he was viewed.

Yeah, I just watched the "Playing to Lose" documentary. Pens tanked for sure to get Mario and only Mario hahaah although they did talk about how contract talks were sour prior to the draft. But yeah they put in 2 defenseman who could only pivot one way and a goalie who let up 24 goals in 4 games. hahahaahahah

Responded on the Hawks thread... but you will have to find those timeslot filler programs they put on Root. Its been in those many times, and I also recall it being in someone's recent book/biography from the Pen's organization. The Fan had the big interview with him last year, he admitted that goalie call up was tanking, but laughed at how at the time they were still split on Mario vs Kirk.

Personally I think that splitting was very stupid, but that is pure after the fact viewpoint for me.

Was EK around then? It sounds eerily similar to one of his "rumors."

I don't have the ability to make up something this stupid, this is what I've heard more than once and have had quite a few chuckles over.

If they were split, there are only 3 reasons I can think of:
1) Someone didn't like French Canadians (understandable) or the QMJHL.
2) Someone just wanted to be different.
3) They weren't actually split, but more wanted to consider every option.

Mario Lemieux was the clearest #1 pick in NHL history. Lindros and Crosby are probably tied for second, followed by McDavid/Kane/Daigle/LaFleur.
